Designing Safety into Medium Voltage Switchgear: Protecting People, Processes, and Product

Safety in medium voltage switchgear extends far beyond arc flash ratings. OEMs designing today's switchgear must address multiple risk factors that affect personnel, processes, and equipment throughout the product lifecycle. This webinar explores critical safety considerations that should be incorporated into every medium voltage switchgear design, including operator exposure, arc flash mitigation, and thermal management. Attendees will learn how modern components, industry standards, protection strategies, and operational features can help reduce risk, improve reliability, and create a safer working environment. Through practical design examples and real-world applications, participants will gain a framework for evaluating safety-related decisions and identifying technologies that can help build safer, more resilient medium voltage switchgear solutions.

What You’ll Learn

  • Recognize key safety risks in medium voltage switchgear.
  • Evaluate design strategies that minimize risk and support compliance with industry standards.
  • Identify technologies and features that enhance reliability, resilience, and operational safety.

Instrument Sensors and Protective Relays: Applications, Hybrid Architectures, Accuracy, and Lifecycle Management

As utilities and industrial power systems continue to modernize, instrument sensors are becoming an increasingly important alternative to conventional current and voltage transformers for protection, measurement, and digital integration. This webinar will compare sensor technologies with traditional instrument transformers, highlighting differences in operating principles, performance, accuracy, installation, and application considerations. Building on this foundation, the session will explore how sensors can be applied with Relion protection relays across a range of protection schemes, including transformer differential, busbar differential, overcurrent, and sensitive earth-fault protection. It will also examine how sensor-derived current and voltage measurements can be shared among multiple IEDs through IEC 61850-based architectures. Particular attention will be given to sensor accuracy, low-current measurement performance, and the requirements of sensitive earth-fault and revenue-metering applications.

Through practical cases, the webinar will review different sensor deployment approaches in transformers, ring main units (RMUs), circuit breakers, and hybrid protection systems that combine sensors with conventional instrument transformers. The session will also address the practical considerations required to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, upgrade, and manage sensor-based protection systems throughout their lifecycle.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Understand the differences between instrument sensors and conventional instrument transformers, including their operating principles, performance characteristics, benefits, and application considerations.
  • Explore how sensors are applied in modern protection systems, including transformer differential, busbar differential, sensitive earth fault protection, and their integration into transformers, RMUs, and circuit breakers.
  • Learn how to design effective hybrid protection solutions by combining sensors and conventional instrument transformers, while addressing key considerations such as measurement accuracy, revenue metering, and overall system reliability.

From Visibility to Value: How OEMs Can Differentiate with Digital Energy Management

Rising loads, tighter uptime demands, and sustainability targets are straining electrical infrastructure — often with little visibility into how power moves through a facility. This session shows how digital energy management portfolios close that gap. See how the digital energy management portfolio delivers real-time monitoring with AI-driven insights. Attendees will learn how a measure-monitor-optimize approach cuts energy costs, extends asset life, and strengthens power reliability.

After this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Measure — Capture accurate power, energy, and power-quality data at the device level without adding standalone meters.
  • Monitor — Use local or cloud-based devices for real-time, centralized visibility and control, locally or remotely.
  • Optimize — Apply AI-driven analytics to lower costs, enable predictive maintenance, and meet sustainability goals.
